JAPANESE FORMER PRIME MINISTER SHINZO ABE ASSASSINATED AT AGE 67<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japanese Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe<\/a> was assassinated Friday July 8, 2022, stunning a nation where gun violence and political attacks are rare. Japan’s influential and longest-serving prime minister worked to revitalize the nation’s economy with his “Abenomics<\/a>” Policy”, which he implemented in 2012. It involved increasing the nation’s money supply, boosting government spending, and enacting reforms to make the Japanese economy more competitive. Abenomics also pulled Japan out of the state of deflation situation it was in. In fact, it helped make Japan one of the most powerful nations in the world. Abe was 67 years old he died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Former Prime Minister was giving a speech for a candidate in Nara<\/a>, a city in western Japan, just ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary elections, when the suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, shot Abe from behind with a handmade firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police tackled and arrested suspect Tetsuya Yamagami at the scene of the crime. Yamagami is a 41-year-old unemployed former member of Japan’s maritime defense force. Police stated that Yamagami confessed to the crime. He also stated that his intention was indeed to kill Abe. However, his motive remains unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People were shocked and horrified by this assassination, which shook the whole country and drew speculation about what motivated the assassination, since Abe\u2019s policies had its critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was a shock to the Japanese, because Japan\u2019s gun control law is very tight, and their bans on guns and rifles are very strictly enforced. They only expect this kind of crime from, Yakuza<\/a>, which is a large, Mafia-like international organized crime syndicate that originated in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Former Prime minister was airlifted to the hospital. However, due to the fatal gunshots to his neck and chest, the doctors unable to revive him. He died several hours later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abe, 67, served as prime minister in 2006 to 2007, and again from 2012 to 2020. He suddenly resigned in 2020 citing health issues. Despite leaving office, he remained influential within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and continued to be a major force in Japan’s political landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaders around the world have been and continue to be united in their grief and outrage at the assassination of Former Prime Minister Abe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Biden said he was “stunned, outraged and deeply saddened,” and called his death a “tragedy for Japan and for all who knew him.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former Prime Minster Abe is also much endeared by the United States, as was one of the first foreign leaders to strengthen relations with former President Donald Trump. The two leaders spent some quality bonding time together over wagyu beef burgers, sumo wrestling, and golf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, Trump coined Abe as a “unifier” and a “great man and a great leader.” And that pretty much sums it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former President Barack Obama, whose tenure overlapped with Abe’s, also paid tribute: “I will always remember the work we did to strengthen our alliance, the moving experience of traveling to Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor together,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abe’s assassination comes at a time when Japan is already debating his legacy. However, some debates may have to wait until the national sense of shock and mourning subside.<\/p>\n
